The Role of Music in Your Massage Experience

At Ohana Therapeutic Massage, we believe ambiance plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall massage experience. The right music not only complements the therapeutic techniques but also helps to soothe the mind and body, guiding you into a state of deep relaxation. Keep reading to explore the different types of music played during sessions at Ohana Therapeutic Massage, and how these soundscapes contribute your healing experience. Whether it’s calming nature sounds, gentle instrumental melodies, or soft ambient tunes, each choice is designed to enhance the therapeutic process, allowing clients to unwind and rejuvenate in a way authentic to them.

What might you hear in the massage rooms at Ohana?

The “Spa Treatment” playlist by Spotify has been a go-to since day one - over eight hours of ambient and instrumental music that focuses on calm, meditative sounds. While Ohana isn’t a spa, I like this playlist in particular because of its consistency across songs, allowing for deep relaxation and focus. After hearing feedback from Tawney about how things have been going with instrumental covers, I’ve slowly been compiling a playlist of my favorites. You’ll also likely hear some lofi and calm beats from time to time! It really depends on my mood that day and what I feel from my clients.  If we’re doing more rehabilitative work, more upbeat or varied music may fit best, whereas if you’re coming in to come down, you may want more grounded and focused sounds.  I’m open to changing things up depending on what you’re feeling - I know how much something as simple as music can impact a session!

You'll often hear familiar music - I tend to gravitate towards instrumentals of a variety of popular songs from different genres. I've noticed two things with this: I'm more focused and my antsy clients settle in better. The familiarity helps me to occupy some brain space when I need to pause with a client's tissues and helps me to not be jittery about moving on and trying another "thing" with a stubborn area - there's another point of focus while I wait to feel change in your tissues, and an easier way for me to gauge time without watching the clock. It also seems to be a welcomed distraction for those who struggle to come into their body at the start of a session - without being overly disruptive to the overall sense of peace. Of course, this is always up for discussion and I'm happy to hear feedback if it's not right for you!

It's all a roulette. I have two main playlists that I use. One was created by a former instructor of mine to promote a ventral vagal response. The other is a compilation of several styles of music that I've come across during my MFR journey. From Tribal to Tibetan singing bowls. Solfeggio frequencies to Enya-esque. Meditation music to the entire playlist first mentioned. And even music that was created by other MFR practitioners across the world. It's over 47 hours of music on shuffle.

That's done on purpose. The style of myofascial release that I do is best received when the client is fully present. Strictly spa or relaxation music can lull people into sleep, putting their presence elsewhere. Having a variety of music keeps it fresh. It's also provided a surprisingly high number of "right song, right time" moments. The moment when the perfect song comes on at the right time to enhance the experience and bring it to the next level. It has a beautiful way of providing that much more healing.

As you can see, the music at Ohana Therapeutic Massage is thoughtfully selected to enhance every aspect of your experience, creating an environment that fosters deeper awareness and healing. Whether you're looking to escape the stress of daily life, address the issues in your tissues, or simply unwind, the right sound can make all the difference.
